We watched the cancer eat away at her life as she said goodbye to her friends. I was trying to prepare myself for her death because I knew this book already had me emotionally attached to her. I felt like I was waiting for her to die – no matter how morbid that sounds. I thought maybe it would be Gus or Keller, in no way did I think Katie would be the one to go.Īfter the audience found out about the cancer, I feel like the tone of the book changed. While I guessed this was a possibility, I was hoping it wouldn’t be Katie. Three months left, only three months to live on the bright side. This was the first-time Keller and Katie admitted their love towards one another and while it was a very heartwarming scene, it also confirmed my suspicions about Katie. Keller brought out a side in her that we didn’t get to see until it was too late – The scene where she goes to Keller drunk and soaked in the rain was so powerful. She is an example to all of us regardless of her being a character in a book. Not judging others by sexuality, looks, class, gender, etc. I think the world can take lessons from Katie and how she treated life. Kate was the “bright side” throughout the entire book, making friends with people who needed it, trying to help those who couldn’t be brave enough for themselves. Those are usually giveaways for a death or for a terminal illness, knowing this I was almost sure someone was going to end up not making it to the last page of the book. It’s kinda funny to me because this book is two years old so most of you have probably read it but still!įrom the beginning, I was skeptical with Katie because if you read as many books as I do, you question any character who believes in “only living once” or “live life to the fullest”. Happy ending or not…Before I continue, I would like to point out that this is NOT spoiler free. My best friend recommended it to me and knowing how alike our tastes in books are, I knew I was going to love It. I went into reading this book knowing that it was going to be deep. So when Kate leaves San Diego to attend college in the small town of Grant, Minnesota, the last thing she expects is to fall in love with Keller Banks. Kate is strong-willed, funny, smart, and musically gifted. She’s endured hardship and tragedy, but throughout it all she remains happy and optimistic (there’s a reason her best friend Gus calls her Bright Side). Kate Sedgwick’s life has been anything but typical.
